Free workshops this week!

Hi Reader,

The thing I love about facilitating workshops is imagining how I would have taught AAPI history more effectively as I plan the workshop. Many more accessible resources have been developed since I left the classroom in 2014, and I'm especially excited about the UCLA Asian American Studies Center Foundations and Futures multimedia textbook! It's the first of its kind and includes such a wide scope from the academic field. I’ll be using this resource at the TRACE THE STORY workshop -- and show an example of how to teach AAPI history within required curriculum standards (that barely includes any AAPI history). Really looking forward to hear what educators brainstorm for their own classrooms!

Building Solidarity and Reclaiming Our History

If you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area, it would be great to see you in person at the 1990 Institute’s upcoming Roots & Wings Symposium! I’m excited to co-facilitate "Building Solidarity and Reclaiming Our History" with Gwenn Lei, Executive Director, Curriculum and Instruction Services of San Mateo County Office of Education. This interactive workshop is designed to help educators integrate Asian American histories and cross-racial allyship into their social studies curriculum. You’ll walk away with classroom-ready resources and practical strategies for teaching complete histories.

Date: Saturday, September 19, 2026 | 10:25 AM – 11:40 AM PST

Location: College of San Mateo Theatre (San Mateo, CA)

Register for the Symposium and attend my workshop here!

Hope to see you!

Warmly,

Freda Lin

Happy Back to School! Hi Reader, It's been a wonderful year of getting back to what I loved most as a classroom teacher: collaborating with teachers on curriculum and lesson planning, crafting lessons, and — to borrow a phrase from a favorite Social Studies Methods text — "being in there with the kids." Working with teachers and learning about their unique strategies was uplifting. It's always great to see teachers doing excellent work, especially in these difficult times. Whether I was...
